>> i got two fans going, can't sleep. >> heat around 100 degrees. how are people coping? this is one of the few fatal bike crashes i've handled. >> did the heat play a role in the death of a 20-year-old man on a bike. the record heat and humidity sends scores of people fleeing to the bay and ocean beaches. >> hello, i'm bruce johnson. thanks for joining us this saturday tonight. we've got team coverage on the heat and humidity. tom has been tracking the record. >> not only a record day. this is one to tell your grandkids and great grandkids about. 91 degrees at 11:00 at night, humidity levels make it feel like about 97. this drop just 5 minutes ago from 101 degrees.

still feels like 102 in fredericksburg. earlier today, some of these numbers were unbelievable, hard really to comprehend. 119 degrees was the heat index value in fredericksburg. he's stonn was up -- eston was up to 110. we'll get close to 100 degrees tomorrow. the difference is this, the excessive heat warning has been discontinued. tomorrow a heat advisory is in effect. that means heat index values to 100 to 105. storms will bring an end to this. much more in a few minutes. tonight, four people being treated for heat-related illnesses after a festival at bull ride regional park. medics were called after 6:00 tonight. that's where some 1,500 people were attending a columbian festival. the four became ill and were transported to local hospitals. a fifth person bass treated at the scene.

the heat may be a factor of a 20-year-old man who died on a bike today. he fell off his bike, hitting his head on a tree and then went into cardiac aarrest. tonight, a warning, cyclists take precautions in this extreme weather. >> this should serve as a reminder to people riding bicycles, be careful of the road and traffic conditions, and also the weather conditions if that is determined to be a cause of it. stay hydrated. >> the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. his name has not been released tonight. an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. tonight, area ems units still tallying up the number of heat-related runs. prince george's county reports 12 trips. 18 for fairfax. armando trull reports there has been a spike in d.c. related heat runs. he's standing by live in northwest. >> reporter: this is engine

company 16. it is known as the white house's own fire station. they're also called the midnight express. all night long, these vehicles have been going out on heat- related calls, and any time now, that alarm could ring, and they could go out yet again. >> hi. you don't like it very much. >> no. >> it's really hot. >> it's the hottest night of the summer. so a very hectic evening for engine company 16, the busiest fire station in the district. >> i think people were inside worried about the heat, and i think they're going to come out tonight, and it should be a busy night. >> reporter: d.c. ems officials say they'll get more than 30% emergency calls. >> tourists wanted to see the city and not lose a day of vacation. there were a number of homeless people as well exposed. >> reporter: most of the extra

volume will be heat-related emergencies. >> mostly dehydration. general weakness, i think. most people just having a hard time standing up. >> reporter: firefighters are aware with the extreme temperatures, they can be very vulnerable to the heat, especially when they wear very heavy gear and equipment like the one you see. so they're being extra careful. >> we made sure we had plenty of water, extra ice packs for both us and also forpatients. and we eat lightly. we had a salad for dinner. so we're ready for tonight. >> reporter: you better believe they're ready. you can see the equipment lined up next to the truck. as soon as the alarm rings, they'll hop in and get out there and start saving more lives. reporting, i'm armando trull, bruce, back to you. >> reporting from northwest. thanks a lot for that report. the record heat could not have come at a worst time for residents of a maryland complex. the air-conditioning is off in a number of units and others have been condemned because of

utility problems. some residents fear the heat many affect their health. as scott broom reports, the residents are on their own for a solution. >> reporter: the pine wood place apartments. jim harley figures, this is a health-threatening situation. >> i'm 58 years old. i'm asthmatic. i worry about my asthma and i have high blood pressure, too. >> reporter: the problem is the aging a.c. unit with dripping pipes and exposed wiring, it simply blows hot air. he says apartment management has been unresponsive, and now the situation is serious. >> my a.c. has been broken almost all summer. >> reporter: everywhere i looked today around this complex, there were problems. i found at least four units condemned by county health officials thursday because of a water pipe burst, shutting down air-conditioning, residents said. they considered themselves the lucky ones, because the condemnation forced management to move them to other units. left behind? more air-conditioning units like this one in shocking condition, dripping water, mold

growing on walls, and the air still hot. >> they moved the people out, but i'm still here. i'm waiting for my trial. i'm waiting for my day in court. >> reporter: the management office was closed today, but the rental agents were still busy with no comment. attempts to reach beacon management, which runs pine wood place, were unsuccessful. >> i just got out of the hospital not too long ago with pneumonia. >> reporter: he says he'll take his chances in the heat. >> my place is ridiculous. something should be done. >> reporter: this issue boils down to money, money the residents say they don't have to spend the night in motels or to move. at 101 degrees in suitland, scott broom, 9 news now. >> prince george's county officials recommend at risk residents get to someplace cool like a mall or a county library. there are no plans for a shelter arrangements tore the residents. jurisdictions in the area have extended cooling centers

and extended pool hours. schedule outdoor activities carefully. avoid long period of time in the sun. by all means wear sunscreen. drink plenty of water and avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine. wear loose-fitting clothing and breathable fabrics, such as cotton. make sure pets have plenty of appreciate water, too. leave outside water bowls in the shady area. never, never leave pets or infants in a car. the heat is sending washington area people to the bay and ocean beaches in droves this weekend. by late saturday morning, the water at the beach had already drawn a nice-sized crowd. the best spot to pitch an umbrella were already taken and the temperature was nearing the mid-90s. >> it's hot, it's very, very hot. >> it's the summertime. what do you expect? >> reporter: they came from d.c., maryland, virginia and pennsylvania to beat the record heat and humidity back home. some people had no plans to get wet. just being near the atlantic

eastern shore and atlantic beaches. in other news tonight, two u.s. naviy service members are missing prompting a has save -- a massive air and ground search. the pair may have been killed or captured by the taliban, afghanistan officials say. meantime bombers in southern afghanistan today killed five american troops. four of the victims died in a single blast. gulf now that tropical storm bonny is gone. dozens of vessels were forced from the area of the broken oil well yesterday as the storm bore down. the temporary cap that contained most of the oil for eight days held during that storm. >> our confidence is increasing that we have better integrity in the well because of the testing that's been done over the last seven days and the whatever anomalies we have found, we have found not to be related to well integrity. >> officials say it could be monday before b.p. resumes drilling on the relief well and wednesday before crews finish installing steel casings. firefighters are battling a brush fire at a naval base tonight. in king george county, an official says it's largely under control. no word on what caused the fire. the base intlies roughly 5,000 civilians and military personnel. how did it happen? a musical festival is marched

heavy rain is causing may job problems in the midwest tonight. parts of the chicago area underwater after more than 7 inches of rain fell today. tens of thousands have no power tonight. the downpour washed out roads, flooded homes and swallowed backyards. >> it was like something out of a movie or something you see somewhere else, where a river, you know, crests and it floods. i've never seen it in the city. unbelievable. >> residents say it's the worst flooding they've seen in years. in eastern iowa, a dam in a resort area northwest of des

moines has failed. the small town is being threatened. all residents in low areas have been ordered to leave their homes, as they can't be sure the dam won't give way. >> it is a very sad situation. you're talking about a catastrophic break in the dam. >> the national guard has been called out tonight to help. in germany, a music festival takes a tragic turn when 15 people are crushed to death in a stampede. it happened during the love parade near did you say sell dorve -- dusseldorf. police tried to keep people from entering an already festival and that led to a stampede. an air force jet in canada exploded in a ball of flames. it happened friday during a practice run for this weekend's international airshow in alberta. the pilot was able to eject from the plane and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.

in milwaukee a massive sinkhole swallows an suv. it happened at a busy intersection with when the sinkhole appeared out of nowhere. the driver was able to get out of the suv to safety and wasn't even hurt. in tomorrow's washington examiner, maryland recovered $26 million lost to troughed and waste and in the -- lost to fraud and waste in the medicare program. cool savings on this hot day. are we looking at a sunday repeat with stifling heat? forecast is next. i'm from the gulf coast. my family spends a lot of time here. i have a personal interest in ensuring that we get this job done right. i'm keith seilhan.

the snow and everything else. we've had 18 days this month with temperatures above 90. in june we had 18 days. that set a record. it's not a record yet, but we continue with this trend, who knows what's next. one more hot day. hear's the day's record. 101. that's what we topped out at reagan national. the old record goes back not just to 1987 but also 1968. we also hit 96 in 1984. look at the low, 81. this morning in phoenix, arizona, the low is 71. how's that for you. heat wave, put this together for you, just to give you an indication. this is the last five days. average high 89 degrees. we hit 93 tuesday, wednesday. we really started the trend with the humidity kicking up. this just five days of 11 straight at 90 or higher. tomorrow will be day 12. it will be the 19th day of the month. and still, even though there's a nice trend on the way, we're still going to have more 90s this week. this is the next three days. take a look at the thunderstorm activity. this is great news. this will bring us not only relief from the heat but give

us needed rainfall. this is associated with a cold front that will drop these numbers. this will be day 12, day 13, day 14. this has yet to be seen. we'll see a big drop in humidity levels and that is welcome. the excessive heat warning has been allowed to expire an hour ago, an hour and a half, but we have a heat advisory, because with themself numbers approaching the century mark with some humidity late in the day, it's going to feel about 100 to 105. now, today's 101 degrees. we hit that at 2:20 in the afternoon. this is hard to believe. bruce mentioned 91 degrees at this hour. typically, current conditions may not be of importance to you. you're already maybe turning in for the night, but this is impressive and it's kind of interesting. 97 is the heat index. it was 101 a little bit ago. fredericksburg at 119. 112, 118 in many locations around the area. just stifling. here's the way things are shaping up. a heat advisory in effect until

8:00 tomorrow night. we're not going to drop below the 80s. 81 this morning's low and probably do it again. the numbers approaching the century mark but with humidity levels at least at some bearable levels, probably only have heat index values, 100 to 105. still dangerous out there, but scattered thunderstorms are the big story here. we've got to talk about bonny. we talked about it all week long. it's nothing. it fell apart. sure, the temperatures in the waters are in the mid-80s but we had a little bit of sheer coming in this area and it destroyed it. this is the flooding rainfall. look what's approaching our area. this is great news. this is along a cold front that will be sliding into the area late tomorrow. the timing on this is critical to what our temperatures will be. if we get some of this cloud cover and rainfall during the afternoon period, it's possible we may not top out at 100. again, we hit 101 at 2:20 this afternoon. the computer models want to give us a pretty good chance of rainfall.
